Ukraine and the Magento community are tightly connected. Varien, the original company behind Magento, had a development team located in Kyiv and thus, a big part of the the code that builds the foundation of our community is from Ukraine.
But in these days it's not about sentimental connections to a country but about the people in Ukraine and those worried about them. Many members of the Magento community have personal relationships and connections to Ukrainians or they live there themselves. Two of our external team members, with whom we have worked together for quite some time now, live in Kharkiv. Their safety as well as the safety of family members of one of our colleagues and the safety of all people threatened by this war worries us.
Many members of the Magento community spend these days actively supporting Ukrainians, e.g. helping them fleeing the country or providing food and shelter in neighbouring countries. A terrific commitment! There are also many humanitarian aid agencies helping people right now. They need financial support to keep up their work in the affected areas. We donated to Doctors without Borders and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. We encourage everyone to pick one or several humanitarian aid agencies of their choice and to support them financially.
If you are interested to learn more about the connections between the Magento community and Ukraine, take a look at the blog post of Jisse Reitsma or the one of the Magento Association; the latter also provides a list of other options how you can help the helpers in on site.
For all those impacted, we hope for a speedy, peaceful end to the war.
